Afiq learns how to clean bikes

This Saturday's ride was put off due to wet weather but we had a classroom session on the different types of bikes and riding styles in Jurong East Library. You can find the resources from Shimano here. MTB 101, Road Biking 101 ,Comfort Biking 1o1.

Anyway, Afiq and Jian Wei joined us on bike cleaning.

Tools of the trade.

Afiq learning about wheel dynamics.

Cassette breaker tool. Used to remove the rear gears of the bicycle.

You insert the cassette breaker into the lock-ring of the cassette.

Using a chain whip and wrench, you twist open the lock ring and free the cassette for washing.

Shimano 9 speed XT 11/32T cassette.

Scbubbing the lock ring with degreaser.

More cogs....

Front of the cassette stack.
Washing the back of the stack.

Nice and clean. Cleaning your cassette and drive train ensures that the parts of your bike do not wear out so easily.

Next up is the chain , rear derailler cage , jockey and centuron pulleys.
Notice the link at the bottom? That is a SRAM power link.

More clean parts to add to the repertoir!

Jeremy degreasing his drive-train with the help of Jian Wei.

Washing with clear water. Rinsing off the muck and dirt.

Drying the chain before re-lubing it again.
Great Work Jeremy !

Great initiative and help Jian Wei!!!

All done . Spotlessly clean!
Very responsible of you!

Alan, with his fractured wrist in a cast. Had a minor accident while riding. That's why safety gear is mandatory in riding. Take care Alan.

All in all, everybody did something that day and learnt useful skills. Even Alan contributed by taking pictures for the blog. Well Done Alan!!!

Till next time,
Hon Shin

Where are they? Can you spot them?

Zheng Hua Park Connector at sunset.

3 tired riders

Today we have 2 new members who joined us for their first ride. The response was great! They liked it and want to come again. They are Jian Yuan and Jian Wei.

We headed to our regular hill training grounds at Hillview and attempted to surmount the peak once again. This time, our 2 new friends had a difficult time as they only had single speed bikes. One was a GT stunt bike and the other was a momoki 20 incher that was almost to the scraps. I was amazed how resilient Jian Yuan and Jian Wei were in trying to climb those hills. Well done guys!!!

Later we went to the park connector at Zheng Hua where they got their first taste of what it is like to ride on the grass and do a super mini MTB trail. They liked it very much. We finished the ride by having a bite at a nearby coffeeshop and rode back as the sun was glistening behind us. What a sight to behold.

Due to an accident on a previous ride, I lost my Cateye Cyclocomputer therefor there is no ride details for this report. Now I have a good reason to go get the better wireless cyclo that I have been eyeing for a long time. :p

Thanks for playing :)
Till next time

Cheers,
HS

First ride in Gangsa

What a wonderful day.... for Gangsa.... Ever wonder what Bukit Timah trail is like after the rain and late in the evening? Alan will be the best person to tell you. Mosquitos everywhere, wet leaves, mud, monkeys, monkey droppings, loose soil and best off all, it's the first time these braves souls decided to tackle the Gangsa Trail at Bt. Timah. We started off and entered into Echo Valley and proceeded inwards into the trail section of the park.

Our 3 riders posing in Echo Valley

At the entrance of the clearing towards The Gangsa Trail

Wide view of the gravel path

Cool pose before the steep uphill climb... They have no idea.... hehehe....

This is a sign board that there is a 3.0 steep slope up ahead ..... TIRED....

What started out as a easy ride became a little more serious and challenging for our Care Riders as they took to the Gangsa Trail. But nonetheless, they proved resilient and forged ahead and completed the trail. The weather was cool and there was sufficient light as our riders made their way towards the Zheng Hua Park for a breather. Jeremy was always cheering the rest on while Alan and Zhi Jie made every effort not to fall into the mud along the trails. Everybody had great fun and learnt what it's like to do real mountain biking. Given the conditions of the bikes, we went very very slowly and had to push the bikes up certain paths for fear of breaking the bikes. Due to the narrowness of the track and lack of lighting due to the overhanging branches in the trail, no pictures were taken. My apologies.

After finishing the ride, we went back towards Jurong East and found a wide park connector where everybody did some sprint training. Jeremy cordoned off a section of the path while the rest of us sprinted to the end. Alan surprised everyone when he showed us what he was made of. 88kg of pure power! I can't wait to see him on a properly set up bike. Boy, will he fly... Go for it Alan!

We all ended the ride with a simple dinner at a nearby coffee-shop before heading back home for a shower and some shut-eye. I wonder what the guys are thinking off next?

Till then, Study Hard, Ride Safe and Rest Well!

Ride Details:
Distance : 13.35km
Avg Speed : 11.7km/h

Cheers,
Mr Lau

25 hills ahead us is this possible? let check it out.

They made it to the top of the 25hills this is impossible 88kg going 25 hills? is he a super hero or a strong man? This was our first time going up 25 hills care alan made it, with a non stop up hills he also can't belives he can do it because of his peer pressure and commitment that cheers him up this steep slope and this 3 strong man was indeed very tired and stress but care jeremy cheers and keep on pressuring care alan and care zhi jie to give them his support so that, that make them feel to have a power and a team spirit to go up those hills. and this is what call a peer preasured so i must say "WELL DONE GUYS KEEP IT UP :)"!!

BIKE It Time To Shower

on the 19 july 2008, it was our first time washing our bike and we do not know the procedures and don't even know how to first start washing for my opinion washing bike was so easy that we only have to take the hose pipe and just spray on it. However after our care teacher mr lau told us and teaches us how to wash our bike i finally started to know why we can't just wash our bike by just spraying on it because we only washes our frame and we do not clean the inner part of the bike that it causes our bike to rust and can't travel smoothly so we took a whole day learning how to repair bike and wash it. jeremy, alan, zhi jie and mr lau have a happy day throughout the saturday and i have learn a new skill :)
